Unfortunately, many people simply end up taking painkillers and retiring to bed instead of increasing their activity once back pain starts. Back pain is actually one of the primary reasons that so many American adults get addicted to pain killers. Addiction is a terrible side effect of these drugs, which fail to address the underlying cause of the pain.
Sadly, pharmaceutical drug overdoses now rank second only to motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of accidental death in the US.

Choosing a Weight Loss Program
- Does the staff include qualified counselors and health professionals such as registered dietitians, doctors, and exercise physiologists?
- How limited are the food choices?
- Who sets your weight loss goal: you, or someone else?
- What percentage of people complete the program?
- What is the average weight loss among people who finish the program and at one year?
- What percentage of people have problems or side effects? What are those problems?
- Is there a maintenance program to help keep the weight off once you lose it? Maintaining weight loss is important, so there should be a plan for this.
- What is the total cost, including any foods or supplements that are required?

1. No snacking! You'll ruin your appetite!
2. Finish everything on your plate.
3. Don't eat before exercising -- you'll get a cramp.
4. Hurry up!
5. You deserve dessert today!
Method 5 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets
- Many studies have been done on the value of HCG, with the results being shaky at best. While some people swear that they lost 25 pounds during the HCG diet, many scientists say there is absolutely no value in injecting yourself with HCG and that it can in fact be dangerous to do so.[9]
Method 4 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets
- This diet requires that you continue your exercise regimen on fasting days as well as on regular days.
- Ease into it by fasting for 1/2 day and seeing how you feel before you commit to longer-term fasting.
Method 2 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets
- Be aware that this diet should only be done for very short-term weight loss and is supposed to function as a detoxifying cleanse rather than a strict weight-loss routine.
Method 3 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets
- Keep in mind that this is not a water only diet. Water-only diets can actually be quite dangerous if done for too long a period of time. Your body needs nutrients to stay healthy and maintain a strong metabolism. If you drink only water for more than a couple of days, when you start eating again you run the risk of gaining even more weight because your metabolism will have slowed tremendously.[6]
Method 1 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets
- Most juice cleanses last for one to three days, though some will go up to seven days at a time. You can either buy a cleansing package from a health store or company online, or you can buy your own juicer.[3]
- Be sure you incorporate plenty of vegetables into your juicing routine. Fruit juice contains a lot of sugar, and drinking a lot of it will cause you to gain weight instead of losing it.
- Some of the most popular cleanse brands include Cooler Cleanse, BluePrint, and Life Juice.[4]

Prevention of a Stroke
How can a stroke be prevented?
High risk patients should be identified as early as possible and the dealing with the treatable risk factors is the cornerstone of preventing a stroke. Controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes, smoking cessation, dietary and life style modification and use of anti-platelet drugs (like aspirin or clopidogrel) in patients who had or have a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or myocardial infarction (heart attack) are used to prevent a stroke. Narrowing in the carotid arteries, usually due to atherosclerosis, is a predisposing factor to thrombus formation may be corrected with stenting. Recurrence of a stroke can be prevented with anti-platelet drugs or warfarin anti-coagulants.Treatment of a Stroke
How is a stroke treated?
Thrombolytic therapy is the only safe and effective treatment for acute ischemic stroke. Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA, alteplase) is the treatment of choice. The aim of the thrombolytic therapy is to minimize the size of the brain damage and minimize disability by restoring blood supply to the affected area of brain. The best results are obtained if thrombolytic therapy is initiated within 3 hours after the onset of stroke. Intracranial hemorrhage should be ruled out with CT scan before initiating therapy. Patients with high blood pressure (diastolic >110mm Hg or systolic >185mmHg) should be treated only after lowering the blood pressure. However lowering the blood pressure without administering thrombolytic therapy can actually cause more damage as the raised blood pressure “forces” blood past the clot thereby allowing oxygen to reach the brain tissue.
Patients who have had recent intracranial surgery, other major surgery, gastrointestinal bleeding, or serious trauma should not be treated with thrombolytics. It is also contraindicated in hemorrhagic stroke patients.
Hemorrhagic stroke has high mortality rate and no effective medical therapy exists.
Surgery may be indicated in few selected cases to treat acute stroke. In some patients, a subarachnoid hemorrhage may be treated surgically.
The predisposing medical conditions mentioned above under modifiable risk factors should be treated or controlled. Many patients with ischemic stroke improve with timely treatment and good nursing care. Stroke rehabilitation involves both physical therapy and occupational therapy.
Diagnosing a Stroke
How is a stroke diagnosed?
Diagnosis of stroke involves a detailed medical history and thorough neurological examination. The clinical features can help to determine the cause, location, and extent of the damage in stroke. Radiological investigations like a CT scan and MRI are useful for the rapid and accurate diagnosis of the type of the stroke as well as the size and extent of the brain damage. The correct identification of the cause of the stroke may require blood pressure monitoring, coagulation studies, blood glucose and cholesterol levels, ECG, transcranial Doppler ultrasound and carotid artery ultrasound.
Signs and Symptoms of a Stroke
What are the symptoms of a stroke?
The clinical features of a stroke are of sudden onset and depend on the type of stroke and the blood vessel affected. This may appear as :- Weakness of one side of the body (hemiplegia) or one side of face
- Difficulty in speaking
- Confusion
- Loss of memory
- Difficulty in walking
- Loss of sensation on one side of the body
- Severe headache
- Vomiting
- Visual disturbances in one eye
- Loss of vision in both eyes
- Disturbances of taste or smell
Risk Factors for a Stroke
What are the risk factors for stroke?
A stroke is more likely to occur in certain people or groups. The following risk factors are non-modifiable, meaning that it cannot be changed.- Older age groups
- Family history of stroke
- Gender – males have a higher risk
- Ethnicity – African Americans have higher risk
- Previous history of a stroke
- Patients with a history of transient ischemic attacks (TIA) or myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Diabetes mellitus
- Hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol levels)
- Cigarette smoking
- Chronic alcoholism
- Obesity
- Drug abuse like cocaine
- Side effects of certain drugs like warfarin and rofecoxib
Causes of a Stroke
What are the causes of stroke?
An ischemic stroke is when there is an obstruction of blood flow to the brain. This is usually as a result of a blood clot which causes a partial or complete obstruction of the artery. If the clot develops in the affected artery then it is known as a thrombus (thrombotic stroke) or it can dislodge from elsewhere in the circulatory system and block the artery in the brain which is known as an embolus (embolic stroke). In a hemorrhagic stroke, there is a rupture of blood vessels that carry blood to the brain. It usually occurs at a site where there is a weakening of the blood vessel wall known as an aneurysm. An adequate supply of blood can therefore not reach the brain tissues.
In both these cases, there is injury of the brain tissue as it is starved of oxygen.

Does water cause weight loss?
- Water contributes to bulk in the stomach and drinking sufficient water before or even during a meal may reduce the amount of food that you eat. Since food contains the calories that you need for energy and fat accumulation, water indirectly reduces your calorie intake albeit moderately.
- Water improves the movement of food and wastes through your bowels. By reducing the bowel transit time, your body may absorb less fat than it would with slower movement. Furthermore water helps you expel the wastes that can accumulate in the bowels and contribute to overall body weight.
- Water counteracts the state of mild dehydration that has become commonplace in modern life. It is a medium used for most body process and has been shown to help the body’s overall metabolism maintain a normal level. Water does not boost the metabolism above the norm but can still prevent weight gain through a lower than normal metabolic rate.
- Water helps restore your energy levels and mood as people who are dehydrated tend to be tired and even feel slightly down emotionally. By doing so, it increases a person’s ability and desire to be more physically active and decreases the tendency to snack in order to increase energy levels and improve mood.
Does water cause weight gain?
With moderate water consumption between 2 to 3 liters of water per day (65 to 100 ounces), you will NOT retain the water and not gin weight. However, this is relative. If you were previously in a state of dehydration and your body mass was lower than what it should be, increasing your water intake will restore natural hydration levels and you may find that your body weight increases moderately. This is not abnormal or excessive weight gain. This is the body weight which you should normally have been but was not due to living in a dehydrated state.
To answer the question about whether water causes excessive weight gain, the answer is no. If you are healthy, your kidney will excrete excess water but retain the amount of water that is normal for your body.
Can Drinking A Lot of Water Cause Weight Gain or Loss?
How much of water for weight change?
Firstly it is important to consider what exactly you may consider as being too much of water. Just a few years back it was thought that drinking 1.5 liters (about 50 oz) was the optimal water intake for an adult. This is incorrect. An adult male should be consuming between 2.5 liters to 3 liters of water a day whereas adult females need between 2 to 2.5 liters daily. This varies by body weight, environmental temperature and level of activity in a day. It will also change if a woman is pregnant or breastfeeding. So instead of just focusing on 8 glasses of water in a day, you should more correctly be drinking at LEAST eight 8oz glasses of water a day which will equate to about 2 liters (approximately 67 ounces). Remember that you will be getting about 20% of your water needs from the food you eat. While tea, coffee and cola may also contribute to daily water intake, the caffeine in these beverages acts like a diuretic thereby causing you to lose water.
