Simple, Effective Approaches for Safely Preventing and Treating Back Pain

Unfortunately, many people simply end up taking painkillers and retiring to bed instead of increasing their activity once back pain starts. Back pain is actually one of the primary reasons that so many American adults get addicted to pain killers. Addiction is a terrible side effect of these drugs, which fail to address the underlying cause of the pain.
Sadly, pharmaceutical drug overdoses now rank second only to motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of accidental death in the US.

Choosing a Weight Loss Program

When you're looking for a weight loss program, it's wise to look for one that will meet your needs and set you up for long-term success.
In general, look for programs that focus on steady weight loss -- about 1-2 pounds a week.
While you're choosing a program, ask these questions:
  • Does the staff include qualified counselors and health professionals such as registered dietitians, doctors, and exercise physiologists?
  • How limited are the food choices?
  • Who sets your weight loss goal: you, or someone else?
  • What percentage of people complete the program?
  • What is the average weight loss among people who finish the program and at one year?
  • What percentage of people have problems or side effects? What are those problems?
  • Is there a maintenance program to help keep the weight off once you lose it? Maintaining weight loss is important, so there should be a plan for this.
  • What is the total cost, including any foods or supplements that are required?
If you plan to lose more than 15 to 20 pounds, have any health problems, or take medication on a regular basis, talk to your doctor before you start a weight loss program.
If you plan to use a very-low-calorie diet, definitely see your doctor first and check in with them throughout your diet.

5 Things Your Parents Got Wrong About Food

Dessert as a reward, snacks that wreck your appetite, and other parental nutrition myths.

Were you a member of the clean plate club when you were a kid? It's time to rethink some of the eating habits that you grew up with.
Diet myths are "handed down for generations," says Kathleen Fuller, PhD, author of Not Your Mother's Diet.

Here are five outdated ideas about food that you may have learned from your parents -- and the grown-up realities.

1. No snacking! You'll ruin your appetite!

Actually, snacking can be healthy, as long as you choose wisely.
"It keeps blood sugar stable" and keeps you from getting too hungry between meals, says Debra Waterhouse, RD, author of Outsmarting the Mother-Daughter Food Trap.
"My general rule is going no longer than four hours without eating something, whether a meal or a snack," says dietitian Constance Brown-Riggs, RD.
Update: Try cutting back slightly on meals so you can have one or two daily snacks between 100 and 200 calories. Good choices include nuts, fruit, yogurt, and vegetables with dip.

2. Finish everything on your plate.

"It's fine to leave a little food," Brown-Riggs says. "Get in tune with your body to know when you've had enough."
Update: As you're eating, notice how you're feeling. Are you full? Are you eating just because there is still food on your plate? Be particularly careful when you're eating out -- the food is appealing, the plates are huge, and you may want to eat it all because you paid for it. "If there are large portions, ask for half now and have them box the other half," Brown-Riggs says.

3. Don't eat before exercising -- you'll get a cramp.

You won't want to go running immediately after dinner, but eating a little bit 30 to 60 minutes before exercising can help you maximize your workout.
You'll get "a quick boost of energy that helps you optimize the exercise session," says Natalie Digate Muth, MD, RD, author of "Eat Your Vegetables!" and Other Mistakes Parents Make: Redefining How to Raise Healthy Eaters.
Update: Choose high-carbohydrate, low-fat, low-fiber snacks with moderate amounts of protein in the 100- to 300-calorie range, such as a glass of chocolate milk, a slice of toast with peanut butter, or a granola bar. Fruit is also fine, although it won't have much protein (add a few nuts for that).

4. Hurry up!

Did your parents rush your breakfast so you were on time for school? If you still eat in a hurry, you might miss your body's cues that you're full.
"It takes 20 minutes for the brain to register that you feel full," Brown-Riggs says. "If you eat too quickly, you can scarf down a lot of food in a 20-minute period, and then you feel stuffed."
Update: Slow down. Take mini-breaks by putting your food and utensils down between bites, Brown-Riggs says.

5. You deserve dessert today!

"We never want to use food as a reward; it sends the wrong message," Brown-Riggs says. "The wires get crossed, and we no longer eat because we're hungry; we eat because we were good and we deserve something."
Update: It's great to reward yourself, but not with food. How about a movie, a manicure, or time with friends? "Soon, you'll realize that you shouldn't just eat because you think you deserve something," Brown-Riggs says.

Method 5 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets

Consider the HCG diet. This is a highly controversial diet that combines injections or supplements of HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) with a severely restricted calorie intake. The calorie restriction alone (only 500 to 800 calories per day) is enough to promote weight loss in most people; it is significantly under the recommended daily calorie allowance, even for people attempting to lose weight. People give themselves doses of HCG via injections or in drop form.[8]
  • Many studies have been done on the value of HCG, with the results being shaky at best. While some people swear that they lost 25 pounds during the HCG diet, many scientists say there is absolutely no value in injecting yourself with HCG and that it can in fact be dangerous to do so.[9]

Method 4 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets

Try the fasting diet. The idea behind this diet is that our bodies were built to go through both times of feasting and times of famine--as such, we should occasionally recreate the ‘famine’ part. This diet requires that for two days each week, you should only eat 500 (if you’re a woman) or 600 (if you’re a man) calories. On those fasting days, dieters should stick to eating only vegetables, seeds, legumes, and some fruit.[7]
  • This diet requires that you continue your exercise regimen on fasting days as well as on regular days.
  • Ease into it by fasting for 1/2 day and seeing how you feel before you commit to longer-term fasting.

Method 2 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets

Consider the Master Cleanse. The master cleanse is a liquid-only diet that consists of a “lemonade” (lemon, cayenne pepper powder, maple syrup, and water), a salt-water drink, and herbal laxatives. The diet lasts for 16 days—three days of easing into the diet by only eating raw fruits and veggies, 10 days of the liquid only diet, and three more days easing back into solid foods.[5]
  • Be aware that this diet should only be done for very short-term weight loss and is supposed to function as a detoxifying cleanse rather than a strict weight-loss routine.

Method 3 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets

Try the water diet. This diet involves drinking a daily total of about 64 fluid ounces (8 cups) of cold water, at regular intervals throughout the day. Drink a glass of water before each meal to suppress your appetite. Doing this will help you get into the habit of limiting the portions of food you consume during each meal. By drinking water, you will feel full before a meal, thus helping you consume less calories.
  • Keep in mind that this is not a water only diet. Water-only diets can actually be quite dangerous if done for too long a period of time. Your body needs nutrients to stay healthy and maintain a strong metabolism. If you drink only water for more than a couple of days, when you start eating again you run the risk of gaining even more weight because your metabolism will have slowed tremendously.[6]

Method 1 of 5: Rapid Weight Loss Diets

Do a juice cleanse. This method is also known as the Hollywood diet.[1]. There are many different kinds of juice cleanses out there. However, the main concept is to only consume juices made from raw fruits and vegetables. The cleanse will remove toxins from your system, helping you lose weight while also making you feel more alert and healthy.[2]
  • Most juice cleanses last for one to three days, though some will go up to seven days at a time. You can either buy a cleansing package from a health store or company online, or you can buy your own juicer.[3]
  • Be sure you incorporate plenty of vegetables into your juicing routine. Fruit juice contains a lot of sugar, and drinking a lot of it will cause you to gain weight instead of losing it.
  • Some of the most popular cleanse brands include Cooler Cleanse, BluePrint, and Life Juice.[4]

treatment

Treatment of Gonorrhea

Gonococci are resistant to the commonly used antimicrobials like penicillins and tetracyclines, and they are avoided as a first choice option. Single-dose of intramuscular ceftriaxone or oral cefixime can cure most cases of uncomplicated gonorrhea. Single-dose oral ciprofloxacin, or levofloxacin is highly effective for gonococcal infections acquired in the United States.
Gonorrhea patients should also be routinely treated for co-existing Chlamydia trachomatis infections, with azithromycin single dose or doxycycline twice daily for 1 week.
Disseminated gonococcal infection patients are treated with injectable formulations such as ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, or levofloxacin for 1-2 weeks. Other complicated gonorrhea infections may be treated orally for 1-2 weeks. All partners in the past 60 days should also be treated.

How is gonorrhea diagnosed?

Diagnosis of Gonorrhea

Medical history would reveal the unprotected sexual encounter(s), a recurrent or peristent UTI (urinary tract infection) and penile or vaginal discharge. Upon a gynecological examination, the cervix can be swollen and can bleed easily.
Gonorrhea may be diagnosed with simple microscopy. A smear from the infected person is sent to a laboratory and evaluated under a microscope to identify the pathogen. A bacterial culture is not necessary but may be done to confirm the diagnosis and test the sensitivity of the microorganism. This will assist with deciding the upon the treatment regimen.
Routine investigations can show raised white blood cell count and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), which are more expensive than a culture, is becoming increasingly common.

What are happens if gonorrhea is not treated?

Complications of Gonorrhea

Common complications of gonorrhea are acute salpingitis (infection of fallopian tube), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), and subsequent infertility. Other complications include epididymitis, urethral stricture, Bartholin gland abscess and disseminated infection. Neonatal conjunctivitis (ophthalmia neonatorum) can lead to blindness.

What are the symptoms of gonorrhea?

Signs and Symptoms of Gonorrhea

Most women having gonococcal infection in the urethra remain asymptomatic or have trivial symptoms, while majority of the men having the infection show clinical disease. Most rectal and pharyngeal gonococcal infections are asymptomatic.
Gonorrhea usually presents with urethritis (infection of urethra). It is among the more common cause of a recurrent UTI due to sexual transmission. Women can also present with cervicitis (infection of cervix). Other sites of infection can include the rectum, vagina (in sexually immature girls), pharynx (throat), and conjunctiva.
In men, gonococcal urethritis is characterized by pain while passing urine and a purulent urethral discharge. Women may  have vaginal discharge, abnormal bleeding (between the menstrual cycles and after intercourse), increased menstrual bleeding and pain on passing urine.
Rectal infections can result in anal itching, mucus discharge with feces, pain, and bleeding. Rectal symptoms are more common in homosexual men than in women with rectal gonorrhea. Pharyngeal gonorrhea is mostly asymptomatic.
Gonorrhea in children may affect the eyes (ophthalmia neonatorum), resulting in pus discharge. It can lead to blindness. Children may also suffer from vaginal or rectal gonorrhea and in these cases, sexual abuse has to be considered.
In disseminated gonococcal infection, fever, skin lesions, and multiple joint pains are common symptoms.

How is gonorrhea spread?

Transmission of Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is mainly spread through sexual contact with an infected person. Following unprotected sex, the chance of disease transmission is higher from infected men to women than infected women to men. Majority of the infections are transmitted by asymptomatic patients and the partner is usually unaware of any sexually transmitted disease.
Gonorrhea can also be transmitted from infected pregnant women to her baby as the child passes through the birth canal at the time of delivery.

What is Gonorrhea (STD)? Sexually Transmitted UTI & Discharge

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD), caused by bacteria known as Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococci). It is a very common STD in the United States, along with genital herpes. Gonorrhea is often seen as a disease that causes recurrent urinary tract infections (UTI) and genital discharge, and while these are the common clinical features, other signs, symptoms and complications of gonorrhea infection may develop over time.

Prevention of a Stroke

How can a stroke be prevented?

High risk patients should be identified as early as possible and the dealing with the treatable risk factors is the cornerstone of preventing a stroke. Controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes, smoking cessation, dietary and life style modification and use of anti-platelet drugs (like aspirin or clopidogrel) in patients who had or have a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or myocardial infarction (heart attack) are used to prevent a stroke. Narrowing in the carotid arteries, usually due to atherosclerosis, is a predisposing factor to thrombus formation may be corrected with stenting. Recurrence of a stroke can be prevented with anti-platelet drugs or warfarin anti-coagulants.

Treatment of a Stroke

How is a stroke treated?

Thrombolytic therapy is the only safe and effective treatment for acute ischemic stroke. Intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA, alteplase) is the treatment of choice. The aim of the thrombolytic therapy is to minimize the size of the brain damage and minimize disability by restoring blood supply to the affected area of brain.
The best results are obtained if thrombolytic therapy is initiated within 3 hours after the onset of stroke. Intracranial hemorrhage should be ruled out with CT scan before initiating therapy. Patients with high blood pressure (diastolic >110mm Hg or systolic >185mmHg) should be treated only after lowering the blood pressure. However lowering the blood pressure without administering thrombolytic therapy can actually cause more damage as the raised blood pressure “forces” blood past the clot thereby allowing oxygen to reach the brain tissue.
Patients who have had recent intracranial surgery, other major surgery, gastrointestinal bleeding, or serious trauma should not be treated with thrombolytics. It is also contraindicated in hemorrhagic stroke patients.
Hemorrhagic stroke has high mortality rate and no effective medical therapy exists.
Surgery may be indicated in few selected cases to treat acute stroke. In some patients, a subarachnoid hemorrhage may be treated surgically.
The predisposing medical conditions mentioned above under modifiable risk factors should be treated or controlled. Many patients with ischemic stroke improve with timely treatment and good nursing care. Stroke rehabilitation involves both physical therapy and occupational therapy.
